McEnroe refuses to apologise to Williams over '700th ranking' comment

The tennis player will be back soon on the circuit in January because she does not think that her story is over yet.

McEnroe, a seven-time Grand Slam singles victor, called Williams "best female player ever - no question", in comments to National Public Radio aired on Sunday.

John McEnroe has acknowledged he should have kept quiet regarding Serena Williams and her hypothetical ranking on the men's tour.

McEnroe went on to explain that when assessing female athletes "You get into a little different category", and said, for example that women basketball players can't be compared to Michael Jordan. I wasn't quite sure what she was saying.

"Then we don't have to guess", added the American.

Williams, who shared an image of the cover and one of the accompanying shots on her Instagram page, was photographed exclusively for the magazine by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz.

Serena Williams is arguably the greatest "female" player in the game.

On Monday, Williams asked the 58-year-old to leave her out of his statements and called for respect and privacy as she takes time off to have her child.

Serena Williams on becoming a mom: 'It just doesn't seem real'

"But either way, I wish her the absolute best", he continued.

Williams revealed in April she was pregnant and would not play again this year.

And Serena couldn't believe it when it was a positive result, especially because she had big plans for her career this year and was on the cusp of playing in the Australian Open - a tournament she went on to win.

Hear him: "I felt like a door had been opened to a person who made me want to be my best self". Riggs won 6-2 6-1.

"I don't know what to do with a baby".

"I've got a solution", McEnroe said. "Am I having a baby?" she said. McEnroe explained, "I think she's absolutely tremendous", but he stands by his original statement.

Williams is one short of Australian Margaret Court's overall record of 24 grand slam titles, which were split between the professional and amateur eras.

Amusingly enough, Williams herself once said that women can't really compete against men.
