Kansas will not provide social security numbers to voter fraud panel

Trump's election integrity commission will meet for first time in July

The letter was addressed to Secretary of State Elaine Marshall, whose office does not handle elections, and the request was forwarded to the State Board of Elections & Ethics Enforcement, which will, "provide only the data that's already public and available under state law", spokesman Patrick Gannon said in an email.

So far, at least 20 states have either declined to provide certain pieces of information - like social security numbers - to the commission or have flat out refused the requests altogether. Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, an immigration hardliner and strict voter identification law advocate, serves as vice chair and penned the letter.

The data dive is part of President Donald Trump's promised elections Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, something that grew from his unsubstantiated claims that last year's election featured massive voter fraud. "Kentucky will not aid a commission that is at best a waste of taxpayer money and at worst an effort to legitimize voter suppression efforts across the country".

Williams re-affirmed Thursday that successful voter fraud is rare in Colorado, and said he was happy that the federal government was seeking input from state officials on how to improve election administration.

Toulouse Oliver, during both her 2014 and 2016 campaigns for Secretary of State, opposed instituting voter ID laws in New Mexico.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, tweeted Friday that his state will not comply with the request.

The scope of the commission and the commission's request has also raised eyebrows.

In Virginia, the governor, Democrat Terry McAuliffe, also criticized the commission in harsh terms. If history repeats, he'll drum up some bogus matching lists, heavily flawed because, for example, the fact that five or six people with the same name, say Jose Cruz or Roosevelt Washington to give you the idea of what Kobach hopes to find, exist in several states isn't evidence of voter fraud.

"Yesterday, my office received from the President's commission a request that I voluntarily produce significant amounts of information on almost four million Minnesotans who are registered to vote", Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon said in a statement Friday.

The request by Kris Korbach, Kansas' secretary of state and the vice chairman of the commission, is already facing a backlash by states that say the request is unnecessary and unwarranted.

Korbach's letter, which was sent Wednesday, asks the 50 secretaries of state to answer seven questions, including what evidence they have of voter fraud in their state and what laws hinder "your ability to ensure the integrity" of elections.

The comment is notable because Kobach has long pushed restrictive voting measures and has stoked fears of voter fraud, even though numerous investigations have found it's not a widespread problem. The Presidential Commission does not appear to qualify under either of these categories.

The extensive voter data Kobach is now requesting from secretaries of state across the country raises the possibility that the commission will use those same methods to probe these voter rolls for suspected non-citizens or for people registered in more than one state, with huge potential to disenfranchise many legitimate voters.

"I fully expect the secretary of state to protect that information if they have it", said Zach Heiden, the chief lawyer for the ACLU of Maine.
