Trump to meet Putin at G20, seek 'more constructive' ties

US, Russia agree to 'continue contacts' in Lavrov-Tillerson phone call

A Kremlin spokesman said on Thursday that Trump and Putin plan to meet for a pull-aside session on the sidelines of the G20 summit, but that formal bilateral talks are not yet being planned. Russian officials have denied any meddling in the 2016 election.

News of the meeting comes amid three ongoing US investigations into potential electoral interference by the Kremlin, and accusations of collusion against the president.

"I have no relationship with him", said Trump, later continuing, "He said something nice about me".

McMaster said Trump would emphasize "whatever the president wants to talk about".

While visiting the headquarters of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) to celebrate the 95th anniversary of Russian illegal intelligence, President Vladimir Putin underlined the challenges now faced by Russia. Russian Federation denies the allegations and Trump says his team did not collude with Moscow.

While it appears a meeting between the leaders is imminent, it's unclear what type of interaction it will be.

In testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Nicholas Burns, a retired career diplomat and State Department official under the George W. Bush administration, said Americans "deserved to know" how Russian officials were trying to influence the most recent presidential election. Trump's promise of closer co-operation with Russian Federation has prompted concerns that the US will have diminished leverage over global issues and he could be more sympathetic to Russian Federation. He says no "specific agenda" has been set for the meeting. First of all, Russophobic sentiments are harmful to the United States itself.

Describing it as a "high-stakes" meeting, National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster explained it would be one of several important one-on-one meetings Trump would engage in with other members of the so-called "Group of Twenty".

"While in Hamburg the President will meet with many world leaders including..."

It will be Trump's second trip overseas as president following his initial foray to the Middle East and Europe in May.
