Ravi Shastri sentiment gains ground in BCCI

Harsh Goenka

Before Shastri entered the race this week, Sehwag and Moody were considered to be the favourites.

Former Indian fast bowler and junior national chief selector, Venkatesh Prasad, has applied for the post of team India coach.

Prasad also revealed that he might not do so before the July 9 deadline, but insisted that he is ready to take up the role of an assistant or bowling coach and contribute to Indian cricket once again.

It seems the list of new applicants for the team India coach is not going to end soon.

Here, it's pertinent to mention that during Kumble's short-lived reign, there was no bowling coach as Jumbo himself assumed that role.

And this is where Shastri becomes the front-runner for the job as earlier, a source close to developments had told CricketNext at the Board had approached Shastri on the insistence of captain Virat Kohli. If the reports are to be believed and the 47-year-old has indeed applied for the job then he'll be contesting against former Indian cricketers Ravi Shastri and Virender Sehwag.

The BCCI is aiming to announce the new coach before India head to Sri Lanka in July.

Former Sanjay Manjrekar joined the Virat Kohli-Anil Kumble discussion as India is waiting for their new head coach and said that it is best if Kohli is taken into the loop while a new coach is being appointed. It is now evident that skipper Kohli wants the former Team India director to get back in the dressing room - this time as head coach.

As reported by TOI, Prasad confirmed that he was applying for the position after the legendary leggie stepped down from the post in the wake of India's Champions Trophy final defeat to arch-rivals Pakistan.

Shastri was part of the team from 2014 to 2016 as a Team Director.

Among the contenders, Shastri is the most favourite of skipper Kohli and has a good track record.

People were expecting former coach, Ravi Shastri, to apply as well.

"May be (I will write), but this is what I am very keen about (the support staff job), Prasad said".
