Modi performs yoga with the masses, sets new record

Yoga practitioners took a relaxing break to bend, twist and pose on Wednesday for the annual worldwide event celebrating the practice, especially in the country where it began. "Yoga's popularity outside India is high and has connected the world with India", he said. Now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken this initiative and made people aware about this not only in India but all over the world. "It is not necessary to perform yoga 24 hours a day".

Speaking on the occasion at the Ramabai Ambedkar Ground in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said yoga is a way of life and helps unite people.

The United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga after Modi, a Yoga enthusiast lobbied for ancient Indian art.

The third International Day of Yoga - June 21- is celebrated in Azerbaijan with a series of public yoga sessions and other events in many cities, including Baku, Sumgait, Ganja and Gobustan.

Modi said the increasing popularity of yoga spurred Unesco to add yoga to its list of intangible cultural heritage, along with Cuba's rumba and Peru's scissor dance, in December past year.

Addressing the participants in Lucknow, Modi said yoga, which connects body with mind and intelligence, was on Wednesday playing an important role in connecting the whole world with India.

The Prime Minister said that in the last three years, new yoga institutes have come up and many youths have started taking up yoga as a profession.
