It's time for No. 1 pick Fultz to turn 76ers into winners

Husky Fever UW is first school with top pick in NBA and WNBA drafts

Markelle Fultz is a self-described hard worker and that diligence paid dividends on Thursday as the Philadelphia 76ers made him the first overall pick in the 2017 National Basketball Association entry draft. Philly fans have also seen great team nicknames rise from nothing before-they still talk about the Broad Street Bullies, a rough-and-tumble hockey team from the '70s whose play reflected their title.

The Process will live on, because the renovation of the 76ers remains incomplete and because marketing genius Joel Embiid probably still has a couple dozen promotions planned, but, really, it's over. One of the names that gained some traction is "The FEDS", an acronym for Fultz, Embiid, Dario Saric, and Simmons.

"I was just waking up", Fultz wrote of when he learned from his trainer, Keith, that he was going to work out for the 76ers.

The top 10 was rounded out with two more freshmen: Dennis Smith Jr. of North Carolina State to Dallas at No. 9, and Gonzaga's Zach Collins at No. 10 with the Kings' second pick, which was later dealt to Portland for a pair of picks. Second-round picks Jonah Bolden and power forward Mathias Lessort out of France also won't join the team next season. He's looking forward to getting on the court with point guard Ben Simmons and center Joel Embiid.

"Everything is designed with a championship in mind", Colangelo said.

"The fan base is responding and reacting to the way this team not only plays on the court but the way they present themselves to the public", Colangelo said.

And when people in the SportsNet studio mentioned that the team had already sold a franchise-record 14,000 season tickets for 2017-18, I was wowed. How coach (Brett Brown) mixes and matches those pieces is going to be up to him.

The Sixers can extend Embiid between July 1st up until the start of the regular season. The trio will represent a young "Big Three" for the Sixers, giving them a foundation to build upon along with a boatload of cap space. "It's going to do whatever we need to do to win".

Outsiders might find it premature for fans to be so gaga over a club that won 28 games last season and just 75 combined over the previous four seasons.

Over the course of the last 1,457 days, the Philadelphia 76ers made move after move, beginning with the draft night trade of Jrue Holiday for Nerlens Noel in 2013, to set themselves up for the future with no regard for the present.
