South Korean official: Too late to host 2018 Olympics with North Korea

BIGBANG's Taeyang holds up a card showing him as an honorary ambassador for the 2018 Pyeong Chang Winter Olympics alongside Lee Hee-beom head of PyeongChang's organizing committee at a ceremony in Seoul

A North Korean official Friday said he will discuss the idea of co-hosting South Korea's 2018 Winter Games with Olympic chief Thomas Bach, as Seoul denied suggesting such a move.

South Korea considered sharing some events at the Seoul 1988 Olympics with the North.

"We don't have enough time to organize between the two Korean teams, but I am scheduled to meet North Korean (International Olympic Committee) member Chang Ung next week - I will propose positive participation in the Pyeongchang Olympic Games". This suggestion comes off the back of South Korean President Moon Jae-in suggesting the counties could submit a joint bid for the 2030 World Cup.

He was speaking after South Korea's sports minister was quoted as saying some skiing events for the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics could be held in North Korea, although officials insist he was misunderstood. "North Korea says the Masikryong Ski Resort was built according to global standards, and I intend to discuss this with Chang", Do said.

As for the idea of forming a unified female ice hockey team, Do said talks should be held with the International Olympic Committee because North Korean athletes have not yet qualified for the winter games.

In comments reported by the Korea Herald, Do suggested the North and South could enter one women's ice hockey team, helping to make Pyeongchang a "peace Olympics".

A North Korean taekwondo team will join South Korean athletes this weekend in a demonstration at the opening ceremony of the sport's world championships in Muju, South Korea. Pyongyang also sent athletes to the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, an event that it has boycotted in the past.

Tensions have risen in recent months with the United States and North Korea trading threats as the latter nation's leader Kim Jong-un launched new missile tests despite repeated warnings to stop. He returned to the U.S.in a coma and died days later. President Donald Trump said North Korea's treatment of Warmbier "a total disgrace", and called the North Korean government "a brutal regime".
