PM Modi holds talks with Portuguese counterpart Antonio Costa

Modi also presented Overseas Citizen of India card to Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa, who has ancestral links with Goa. Before leaving for Lisbon, Modi had said during his meeting with Costa, the two leaders will build on their recent discussions and review the progress of various joint initiatives and decisions.

"India too has its own viable startups and industry".

Ahead of the visit, Indian Ambassador to the US Navtej Sarna said the first face-to-face meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump will give them an opportunity to look at the entire gamut of Indo-US engagement and to exchange views on issues of global interest.

Modi is the first Indian prime minister in Portugal for a bilateral visit.

"A lot of work has been done in six months since I visited India".

"I think that it would be wrong to say that this administration has been ignoring or not focused on India", a senior administration official told reporters ahead of the two-day Modi visit from June 25.

"Our economic ties continue to follow an upward trajectory".


Modi also stressed on people-to-people ties between the two countries saying Costa's passion for football would help deepen bilateral ties.

Later on Saturday, Modi will lead delegation-level talks with Costa before the signing of agreements and launch of the India-Portugal Start-up Hub.

The other agreements signed are an India-Portugal space alliance, a protocol amending the double taxation avoidance agreement for the avoidance of double taxation and the prevention of fiscal evasion with respect to taxes on income, an MoU on Nano Technology, an MoU on Public Administration and governance reforms, an MoU on cultural cooperation, an MoU on biotechnology, and an MoU on a Portugal-India Business Hub.

India and Portugal have agreed to set up a joint fund of four million Euros to support bilateral collaboration in cutting edge technology.

Following his official engagements, Modi visited a temple and interacted with the Indian community here before embarking for the U.S. on the second leg of his three-nation tour. This was disclosed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi this evening in his press statement at Lisbon after the meeting of the two leaders.
