Mexico's Salcedo to miss rest of Confederations Cup

Host Russia Exits Confederations Cup After Loss to Mexico

The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup Group A match between New Zealand and Portugal will be played at Saint Petersburg Stadium and kicks off at 17:00 CEST on Saturday 24 June 2017.

Mexico equalised when Aquino broke down the left flank and passed to Marco Fabian, who squared for forward Jimenez to fire home on 54 minutes.

In an even start to the match, Giovani dos Santos was denied by a superb Thomas block after a swift Mexico counter-attack, while New Zealand's Tommy Smith had a header saved by Alfredo Talavera at the other end.

An angry exchange between the two benches followed, with Osorio pinning the blame for the situation on Armstrong.

He was adjudged the Man-of-the-Match and thus had to attend the post-match press conference.

Another commented: "Wow. I can't believe only one card was shown!"

New Zealand coach Anthony Hudson defended his players and said the fact they were able to fully test the more fancied Mexicans was a more likely reason for their frustration.

"We knew it was going to be a hard game against a very strong team".

"Both our players and myself were shouting at them to please stop the game but there was no reaction on their side".

Before the game Mexican coach Juan Carlos Osorio had described the All Whites as "gentlemen" but he bemoaned that 'the game was really rough, almost violent and I think that's unacceptable'.

He would like at least two more matches to watch that development, and to see further encouraging signs of worldwide pedigree shown by, say, the Krosnador striker, Fyodor Smolov, the leading scorer in both the last two seasons in the Russian Premier League, the league from which all the squad are drawn.

"I'm very happy, " he said.

This will be the first senior meeting between eighth-ranked Portugal, and New Zealand, who are 95th - sandwiched between Guatemala and Madagascar.

"I don't want to sit here and talk about the negative things that were happening", he said.

Many will point to Osorio for the lackluster game, but part of the blame should be put on numerous underwhelming starters.

The win leaves Portugal in a strong position with four points in Group A with just a game against outsider New Zealand remaining Saturday.

"All the media talked about our team as having zero chance in this game, all of the media".

"Every player will give their absolute all".

"I'm proud of what the lads did, they put in a great performance and ultimately we should have got more out of it, we didn't get the result we wanted and probably deserved". "We knew who needed to go where but sometimes games don't go according to plan".
