Trump confirms he's under investigation, fires angry tweets

About a week after Comey was sacked last month, however, Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Mueller as a special counsel at the Justice Department to oversee the federal investigation into Russia's efforts to meddle in the 2016 US election, according to CBS News.

Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special prosecutor in an investigation of alleged collusion between Trump associates and Russian Federation in the 2016 election.

His comments follow revelations that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether the president obstructed justice by firing Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey.

In an early-morning tweetstorm, Trump blasted the investigation as a "witch hunt" and a "phony story".

Trump wrote that the investigation has not "been able to show any proof", an allegation that he assessed with one of his signature Twitter catchphrases: "Sad!"

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein submitted a widely circulated memo to the president last month raising concerns over Comey's performance, but Trump later asserted that he had already made the decision himself to fire Comey.

His comments follow revelations that special counsel Robert Mueller is examining whether Trump obstructed justice by firing FBI Director James Comey.

"The public interest requires me to place this investigation under a person who exercises a degree of independence from the normal chain of command", Rosenstein said in his announcement last month.

Meanwhile, members of Trump's transition team were ordered to preserve documents and other material related to the Russian Federation investigation, the New York Times reported. Though Mr Pence was not involved in Mr Trump's presidential campaign, he may be called as a witness in the investigation into links between the Trump campaign team and Russian Federation.

Dianne Feinstein, top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said she was "increasingly concerned" that Trump will fire both Mueller and Rosenstein.

The White House has said that Kushner's subsequent meeting with Sergey Gorkov, CEO of Russia's state-owned Vnesheconombank, was unrelated to business matters.

The furious early morning barrage of tweets - his second in as many days - came as the special counsel investigating Russia's influence over his election pieced together a high-caliber legal team and readied to begin interviews. It's seeking all memos, emails or other documents in which Comey discussed or memorialized conversations with Trump.

The move ordered Thursday by the transition's general counsel cast a wide net on documents tied to the Russian Federation investigation as well as inquiries into the activities of Trump associates. "Nice." And then: "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!"
