'Get back! Get back!': Police releases audio after killing a pregnant woman

"They could have taken her down".

"She called for a DV". Three children were inside the apartment at the time and were unhurt, reports CBS affiliate KIRO. In it, an officer is heard saying "Get back!"

"There were several children inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, but they were not injured", a police statement read.

"After talking with Lyles' family, we learned that Lyles has experienced a recent sudden and rapid decline in her mental health", Lim wrote.

Lyles had an extensive criminal record and she was released from jail June 14. Why didn't officers use the less lethal force options they were equipped with?

"Our historic police reforms, from de-escalation training to civilian-monitored force review, are in place to address such crises", he said.

During the June 5 incident, Lyles spoke about wanting to "morph into a wolf" and made "several unusual religious comments talking about how the police officers were devils and also members of the KKK", Officer Davidson Lim wrote in a police report.

Some of Lyles' relatives have asked why officers didn't tase her. Police sources say the officers did not have Tasers with them, but that they did have a "less than lethal" weapon, which has not been specified. The woman can be heard telling the officers the door was unlocked.

"We need help", an officer says into his radio.

Lyles' sister, Monika Williams said her sister suffered from mental problems and was recently released from prison after being detained for getting in the way of a public official and two counts of harassment.

She tells them she left her door unlocked while she went to the store and that while she was out her Xbox was stolen. The group that runs the complex, Solid Ground, says the people who live there have resources offered to them to get help, but only if they ask.

Additional officers arrived and persuaded her to drop the scissors.

Police Detective Mark Jamieson said on Sunday that Lyles had been arrested earlier this month by officers responding to another call after she had armed herself as protection against her boyfriend.

Among other reasons, suspicion of police officers often stems from the high rate of racial profiling, the frequent use of excessive force against minorities, officers' reported tendency to lie about the details of police brutality incidents, and misleading or explicitly lying to people they stop about their rights.

This commotion lasts 16 seconds, and then they fire the gunshots that kill her.

The woman was identified by family members as 30-year-old Charleena Lyles, who relatives said was a mother suffering from mental health issues.

"Do our lives really matter to them?"

The dash cam video shows the two officers walking to the apartment and discussing a previous call to the woman's residence.

Despite an attempt at CPR, Ms Lyles died at her home.

On the audio, the woman can be heard discussing with the officers that there was a break-in.

Charleena Lyles was at home with her three children, and several months pregnant with her fourth, her family told local media. At the end of the video, an officer can be seen partially backing out of the doorway with his arms raised.

Ed Murray, the Mayor of Seattle, released a statement saying the shooting in Seattle was "a tragedy for all involved". "This will be fully investigated", he said.

Under the agreement with the Justice Department, Seattle police adopted a new policy dictating that uses of force by officers must be reasonable, necessary and proportional to the threat or urgency of the situation.
