The Murder of Nabra Hassanen Isn't Just About One Man's Road Rage

The nature of the fire is now under investigation, officials say.

The crowd overwhelmed suburban traffic, and cars jammed into neighborhood streets more than a mile away to park. "We all think it's okay to just go and get food with our friends", Salem said.

"The Fairfax County Police Department has partnered closely with the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office with the common goal of justice for Nabra as well as for her family, friends and community", FCPD said in a news release. "Christian, Muslim, Jew, Hispanic, whatever".

Hassanen's father, Mahmoud, told reporters he believes "100 percent" that his daughter was targeted for her religion.

Darwin Martinez Torres, 22, has been arrested and charged with Hassanen's murder in an incident which police say began as a "road dispute" with one of the male teenagers of Hassanen's group.

Several donation pages have been established to help Nabra's family, including a GoFundMe, which has raised more than $70,000 of a $100,000 goal, and a LaunchGood, which has raised $308,476 of a $350,000 goal.

Then, police say, he drove off with her in his auto, attacked her again, and dumped her body in a pond.

But Nabra's father told The Washington Post that he believes she was murdered because of her religion.

William Miller, a spokesman for the USA attorney's office in Washington D.C., says Soloman will likely have his first court appearance on Thursday, when charging documents further explaining the crime will become public.

But Morrogh said that Virginia statutes would allow him to prosecute Martinez Torres in Fairfax and that retaining the case made sense because Fairfax County police had investigated the teen's disappearance.

Shahnaz Aurazaki of Sterling said she lived in the area for 32 years, and it was always safe, but "now every day you see something on the news". Martinez Torres, 22, has been charged with murder. "And it wasn't just Muslim youth" but the broader Reston community that she was connected to, he said.

However, Fairfax County Police said Monday that Darwin Torres, a 22-year-old El Salvador native suspected of being in the USA illegally, appeared to be motivated by road rage rather than hatred towards Nabra's faith. Torres pulled over, chased the group with a baseball bat and attacked Nabra, police say.

He says that even though police aren't investigating her killing as a hate crime, it's generating concern among Muslims, and a feeling that "you have to watch your back".

People placed flowers and lit candles there Tuesday evening to commemorate Nabra Hassanen, 17, who was beaten to death with a baseball bat early Sunday as she walked to a mosque near her home in a Virginia suburb of the nation's capital.

Muslim advocacy groups have said that authorities should continue to look into the possibility of bias.

The likeness shows a pair of glasses like the ones Hassanen wore, over the outline of her face, wrapped in a headscarf, with the hashtag #Nabra.

Joshua Salaam of the ADAMS Center said at a press conference Tuesday that police "have given us complete confidence".

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

For Saniya Salah, 74, who lives around the corner from the mosque that Hassanen left minutes before she was attacked and has granddaughters Hassanen's age, the attack has shaken her sense of security.
