Trump Lawyer Says President Isn't Under Investigation, Despite Tweets

A member of Donald Trump's personal legal team sent out to deny the president is under investigation, did just the opposite on "Fox News Sunday" - twice saying "he's being investigated". "The President's response was as it related to the Washington Post report".

On "Fox News Sunday", Sekulow said that he was certain the president was not under investigation because he had received no notification or other indication that he was.

On Sunday, Sekulow sought to explain that Trump was using Twitter, a favorite means of communication with his supporters, to address The Post report and was not actually confirming that he is being investigated, despite writing those words. "I can not read the mind of the special prosecutor", Sekulow said. He said Trump's statement on Twitter Friday was specifically in response to a story in The Washington Post about the expanding probe into Russia's election meddling.

When asked if Mr. Trump interfered in the FBI's investigation, Sekulow said that in prior interviews, Mr. Trump "acknowledged that by firing James Comey as FBI director the president acknowledged that he would in fact probably extend the nature and length of the scope of the FBI, the special counsel probe".

Jay Sekulow made the remarks during a contentious back and forth with host Chris Wallace, one of a series of shows on which the attorney repeatedly insisted that Trump wasn't under investigation by Justice Department Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

A source familiar with the matter told CNN's Evan Perez that investigators for Mueller would speak with Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats and National Security Agency Director Mike Rogers.

The five people spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly.

"I don't believe it's going to happen", said Rubio on CNN's "State of the Union".

"There's a limitation on Twitter, as we all know", Sekulow said. "There is not an investigation of the president of the United States, period".

Jay Sekulow, a lawyer who is part of a team hired by Mr Trump to deal with allegations of collusion by his campaign with Moscow, appeared on Sunday to contradict Mr Trump's statement on Twitter on Friday that he was being investigated for firing his Federal Bureau of Investigation director last month. It also sent a letter to Comey asking for any notes or memos. "So that's the constitutional threshold question here".

Mueller would be allowed, though not required, to answer that question, unless it involved material before a grand jury, the former White House lawyer said.

"So the president responds - I want to be crystal clear here".

Schiff said Trump, his legal team and his supporters were trying to discredit the special counsel and his investigation.

He added that he could not "imagine a scenario" where Trump would be under investigation and not be aware of it.

Prosecutors will often answer then to avoid misleading the target.

Sekulow also told CBS on Sunday that Trump remains willing to speak under oath about the Russian Federation matter, as Trump had promised at a Rose Garden news conference earlier this month.

Sekulow: No. No, he's not being investigated.

Sekulow said that Trump has not been notified of any investigation and that the latest information they have is from Comey's testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee. "That's the the long-established practice of the Justice Department".

Sekulow responded that Trump couldn't be indicted "because there's not an investigation".

Wallace: ... First of all, you've now stated that he is being investigated.
