Top Trump aide exits as wider White House overhaul expected

Mike Dubke: White House communications director quits

A lawyer who works with prospective political appointees told Politico that three candidates said the ongoing probes into Russian interference in the 2016 election and any collusion with Trump campaign associates have convinced them not to pursue jobs in the administration. He urged his followers to figure out the "true meaning" of "covfefe".

"It's an additional factor that makes what was an already complicated process of staffing the government even harder", said Max Stier, head of the Partnership for Public Service, which has advised the Trump transition on hiring.

Asked about a possible staff shake-up, Spicer said: "I think the president is very pleased with his team and he has a robust agenda".

Daily White House briefings have been dominated by questions about Russian Federation, and Trump's advisers feared the controversy could seep into Trump's foreign trip if he held a news conference.

Lewandowski did not say if he has been contacted by Trump or anyone on his staff about returning.

That trails the records of Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, who had each nominated about twice as many people by this point in the first year of their first terms.

Trump's original tweet, which was sent out shortly after midnight on Wednesday morning, simply read, "Despite the constant negative press covfefe".

The tweet immediately went viral and became one of the president's more popular posts.

Trump tweeted in jest about the whole ordeal just after 6 a.m. ET.

Dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster checked in with an eye-rolling tweet about people looking up "covfefe" on its website.

"There would be no reason for Kushner, in December", he added, "weeks after the election to need to set up a back channel to Russian Federation, had there been one during the campaign".

Spicer's statement was in response to a question about reports that former FBI Director James Comey, who was terminated by Trump, meant to testify before Congress that the president urged him to drop an investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.

Trump has privately and publicly pinned much of the blame for his administration's woes on the communications effort.
