Paris attacker 'pledged allegiance to IS'

Paris French policeman fires on man'armed with hammer at Notre Dame Cathedral

The man who attacked an officer Tuesday at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris said, "This is for Syria", French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb said.

French authorities identified Tuesday's attacker as a young Algerian man carrying student identification, and said he was armed with a pair of kitchen knives in addition to the hammer. After the incident, the cathedral building has been locked down, the people have been instructed to stay away from the area. The Paris counter-terrorism office has opened an investigation following the incident, the French prosecutor's office said. "One sees that we have gone from a very sophisticated terrorism to a terrorism where, in the end, any tool can be used to carry out attacks", said Collomb, the Interior Minister.

In total, more than 230 people have died in attacks across France in the past two-and-a-half years, majority claimed by Islamic State. A police official from another union confirmed the age of 40 to The Associated Press.

One of his colleagues opened fire on the assailant, injuring but not killing him.

The officer fired at the attacker, police said.

Earlier having been reported shot dead by police, the suspect is, in fact, alive and in hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest from police.

French policemen point their weapons near the site of an attack at the entrance of Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris on June 6, 2017.

One hour later, police said the public would be "gradually allowed to go out, after the usual checks".

The incident happened at around 4.30pm local time on Tuesday, and large numbers of police cars filled the area on the Ile de Cite island in the Seine River as passers-by were urged to avoid the scene.

No group immediately claimed responsibility, but police searching the man's residence outside Paris found a declaration of allegiance to the Islamic State group, according to the Paris prosecutor's office. "I saw emergency services, military personnel and what appeared to be police dressed in bomb squad gear".

It is the first attack since President Emmanuel Macron won last month's election and comes days before a parliamentary poll in which opinion surveys show Mr Macron on course to win a landslide majority.

13 Nov 2015 - IS jihadists armed with bombs and assault rifles attack Paris, targeting the national stadium, cafes and Bataclan concert hall.
