Middlesbrough appoint former Leeds boss Garry Monk

Middlesbrough appoint new manager

The former Netherlands worldwide guided Reading to the Championship play-offs last season at the expense of Leeds United, which has led to attention from other clubs.

GARRY MONK has made keeping Ben Gibson his priority after starting work as Middlesbrough boss.

"This club ticks all the right boxes for me".

Garry Monk admits that the Middlesbrough job ticked all the right boxes and insists that immediate promotion back to the Premier League "has to be the ambition".

However, with interest building in a number of players, the new boss might decide it is better to move some people on rather than force them to remain in the Championship.

Gary Monk had a 1-year rolling contract with Leeds United and it was expected that he would sign a new contract with the club this year.

"I don't want to get into details to be honest, out of respect for Leeds, but having gone there and worked for Massimo originally, obviously Andrea came in and there was new ownership and so a new structure".

"I want to go to the top, I played at the top as a player and I want to as a manager", the former Manchester United player said.

Monk has yet to finalise his backroom staff or decide the future of former head coach Steve Agnew and won't meet his players until they report back for pre-season training later this month. I'm ambitious, I want to be working and I want to find the right challenge.

However, the Dutchman wishes to finish what he has started in Berkshire and will only contemplate a departure to a Premier League side according to agent Henk Timmer.

"It doesn't always have to be the biggest club, it's about what the opportunity is".
