Trump Says Some Things Comey Told Committee 'Just Weren't True'

Speaking the day after Comey delivered a scathing indictment of the president at the Senate Intelligence Committee, the U.S. president again denied two key claims made by the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director and labelled him a "leaker". Appearing with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Trump mused, "Who would like to ask?"

President Trump stunned both his own aides and the leaders of America's closest allies late last month when he departed from his prepared remarks and cut a sentence explicitly saying that he was committed to the mutual defense provision at the heart of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military alliance.

The brief news conference - where each President took two questions from the press - comes the day after James Comey's bombshell Capitol Hill testimony in which the fired Federal Bureau of Investigation director accused the White House of "lies". Trump flatly denied that he had never said that he wanted Comey to end the investigation into Michael Flynn. And if you could also tell us, sir: Do tapes exist of your conversations with him?

"One hundred percent. I didn't say, under oath, I hardly know the man".

"No I didn't say that", Trump stated abruptly, taking questions Friday at a joint press conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis in the Rose Garden.

"Yesterday showed no collusion, no obstruction", Trump said in reference to the twin controversies dogging his administration - accusations his aides colluded with the Russian effort to tilt the vote, and that he sought to block the related Flynn probe.

He said that he'd carefully documented his interactions with Trump because he anxious Trump would misrepresent them, and accused the administration of spreading "lies, plain and simple" about the reasons for his firing.

Trump's decision to weigh in personally on Comey's testimony represented a sharp shift in strategy for the White House and could come with political risk for Trump, who has potentially undermined himself legally on other matters through his tweets, including his attempt to impose a "travel ban" on immigrants from some majority-Muslim countries.

Bob Inglis, a Republican former congressman who voted to impeach Bill Clinton in 1998, suggested Trump might be in particularly hot water.

"Well, I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future", he said at the media conference. We are doing really well.

Comey said he had never felt the need to detail his meetings in writing with any United States president (previously he worked for President George W Bush and President Obama, a Republican and a Democrat), but did feel the need to do so with President Trump.

"Despite so many false statements and lies, total and complete vindication", Trump tweeted, "and WOW, Comey is a leaker!" I didn't say that and I didn't say the other.

Harvard Law School professor Mark Tushnet said onlookers should keep in mind that Comey knows much more than he can say, calling his testimony a "big deal". "Comey described an episode during the inquiry into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server when then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch directed him 'not to call it an investigation but to call it a matter, which confused me and concerned me.' Comey said that language 'tracked" how the Clinton campaign was talking about the FBI's work.
