Petition grows against May's deal with ultra-conservatives

May faces uncertain future as right-wing press turns on bruised PM

Mrs May said: "What the country needs now more than ever is certainty".

The DUP is the largest unionist party in Northern Ireland, holding 10 (out of 18) seats at Westminster and 28 (out of 90) seats in the Northern Ireland Assembly.

They said categorically that they supported the nuclear deterrent and given Corbyn's well-publicised links with Sinn Fein it would be safe to assume that they would in no circumstances support a minority Labour administration.

And it wasn't only May and the Conservative Party that had a rough night in Thursday's election as the SNP also lost a string of seats and top talent from their ranks.

"I have always believed we are stronger when we appeal to the middle ground".

After losing her majority in the UK Parliament, the Conservative Party leader has turned to Arlene Foster and the DUP in a bid to ensure she remains Prime Minister.

The Liberal Democrats said May should be "ashamed" of carrying on.

However, in an election shock seats swung to Labour, which won Battersea, Shipley, Bury North and Stockton South among others from the Conservatives.

Former Labour Party spokesman Alastair Campbell, whose government got the Good Friday agreement signed in 1998, said May was threatening the peace process by securing an alliance with one of the parties the United Kingdom government is supposed to be mediating between. "I would have thought that is enough for her to go actually", he said.

The DUP has close ties with the Conservatives, and it is in favor of the U.K.'s withdrawal from the European Union.

While the UUP is a relatively harmless centre-right party that has had a long-running relationship with the Tories, the DUP is far more conservative, particularly when it comes to social issues.

May had spent the campaign denouncing Corbyn as the weak leader of a spendthrift party that would crash Britain's economy and flounder in Brexit talks, while she would provide "strong and stable leadership" to clinch a good deal for Britain.

That view was echoed by former chancellor George Osborne, sacked from the Cabinet by Mrs May and now editor of the Evening Standard.

May said Barwell would help her "reflect on the election and why it did not deliver the result I hoped for".

She said she would crack down on Islamist ideology, and "put fairness and opportunity" at heart of everything her government would do over the next five years to build a better country.

"She's staying, for now", a party source told Reuters.

Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, often tipped as a potential successor to Mrs May as Tory leader, said: "We've got to listen to our constituents and listen to their concerns".

In Scotland, the SNP retained just 35 of the 56 seats it secured two years ago and lost its Westminster leader, Angus Robertson, and former first minister, Alex Salmond. Cllr O'Neill did however considerably reduce the majority of Conservative Iain Stewart to just 1,725 from a majority of 8,672 in 2015.
