Ohio State hires Butler basketball coach Chris Holtmann

Matta, who also coached at Butler, won 337 games at OSU, the most in program history. Throughout his entire career, Holtmann has gone 114-85 overall with a 4-3 record in the NCAA Tournament. He was named the Big East Coach of the Year this past season.

Holtmann spent four seasons at Butler, the last three as head coach. After one year as an assistant, Holtmann found himself back in the lead chair. The school then focused its efforts on Holtmann.

Brown is the latest targets of the school after Creighton University head coach Greg McDermott was offered the job. Names like Brad Stevens of the Boston Celtics and Billy Donovan of the Oklahoma City Thunder were thrown around. Holtmann hasn't only proven himself a successful coach in a major conference, he has strong Midwestern ties and has proven himself able to recruit in the state of Ohio. His 2017 recruiting class is the No. 34 ranked class in the nation, according to 247Sports, and features 6-foot-6 small forward Kyle Young, a four-star prospect from Massillon, Ohio. Matta steered the Buckeyes for 13 seasons, taking the program to two Final Fours, five Big Ten regular-season crowns and four league tourney titles.

The 45-year-old Holtmann is a native of Nicholasville, Kentucky, who cut his teeth as an assistant at OH from 2008-10, working under John Groce who would become IL coach. Like Matta, he a coach of the Bulldogs before being hired by the Buckeyes, so there is something in common with his predecessor.

Those victories set up a Sweet 16 date against the North Carolina Tar Heels, who went on to win the national championship after dispatching Butler 92-80 in regional semifinal action.

It appears Ohio State's far-less-cool mascot, Brutus, already is trying to lure Butler Blue III to Columbus, as well, but our boy is staying strong, even firing back despite his obvious sadness.
