London attacker stopped en route to Syria, flagged as suspect

Seven people were killed and nearly 50 injured when three attackers ran down pedestrians on the bridge, then stabbed passers-by in nearby Borough Market.

This led police to search the premises of Zaghba's Italian mother, who lives in the Bologna area.

Although British authorities said he was not known to police or security services, Italian officials said Britain was notified he was as a "possible suspect" back in March 2016.

A court ruled there was not enough evidence to charge him with terrorist offences, but Italy's Internal Intelligence Service rpassed on details to the MI6 liaison officer in Italy, who relayed the information to MI5.

Italian authorities had previously informed Britain of the third attacker's plans to travel to Syria.

Zaghba was reportedly working in a London restaurant and had not been seen in Italy since 2016.

The mayor of Valsamoggia, a town near Bologna, said that Youssef Zaghba, 22, was the son of an Italian mother and a Moroccan father who had separated, and was registered as an Italian living overseas.

The search in Ilford, just north of Barking, is seeking to determine whether the group had accomplices. According to the reports, the latest person arrested is a 27-year-old man who was detained Tuesday morning under Britain's Terrorism Act.

Butt had appeared in a documentary "The Jihadis Next Door" and was known to investigators but police said he was not believed to be plotting an attack.

This afternoon Scotland Yard released the name of the "third" London attacker, Youssef Zaghba, after releasing names of the other two yesterday.

ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, in a statement published by its Amaq news agency.

A Met Police spokesperson told CNN that an investigation into Butt started in the summer of 2015, during which police received a call to the anti-terror hotline.

'Jihadi next door" was known to police * London terror attack: United Kingdom police name two of three attackers * London terror attacks: "Get down!' police tell bar patrons * Will Theresa May's four-point anti-terror plan work? Redouane had not aroused any suspicions. British security officials said none of the men was considered violent, but they acknowledged the difficulty of predicting whether extremists will turn risky.

"Although it is positive that we are making significant progress, we still need you to help us build a picture of exactly what led to this atrocity", police said, appealing for anyone who recognised the vehicle or bag to come forward.

In his neighbourhood, Butt was known as Abu Zaitun - or Abu for short.

Butt, who had worked at one stage for Transport for London, was an associate of Anjem Choudary who is now serving five and half years in prison for supporting Isis. The company was looking into Italian media reports that Zaghba also was a former employee. "That is a question that will need to be answered by MI5, by the police, as the investigation goes on", he said. Commuters walk across London Bridge, with new security barriers, after work in London, Tuesday, June 6, 2017. A huge number of the major attacks in Western Europe have involved terrorists with Moroccan connections.

The threat level remains at moderate but frontline Gardaí have warned they've had no counter-terrorism training. At least seven people were killed and dozens were injured.

It's not clear when that call came in - and what other cases were pressing - but ultimately Butt was not considered a priority and he was placed in the lower echelons of the long list of individuals under investigation. Mohammed Shafiq of the Manchester-based Ramadhan Foundation, an anti-extremism group, says that he believes he was verbally assaulted by Butt in 2013 - the day after another ALM follower killed Fusilier Lee Rigby in Woolwich, south-east London.
