Lions beaten 22-16 by Blues in Auckland in 2nd tour match

As Warren Gatland and his coaches sit down to figure out what to do next ahead of the imminent clash with the Crusaders on Saturday, perhaps it is worth remembering that the Lions next opponents now top the Super Rugby table and have yet to lose this season.

Things don't really get any easier for Gatland and co. following the match against the Crusaders.

The Blues couldn't take advantage of their extra man, and fell behind to two second-half Halfpenny penalties, which followed one first-half effort - only for West to pop up with the victor and send long-suffering Blues fans into delirium.

West - who comes from a Sevens background - has speed to burn. "We came here to build on Saturday's performance". All credit to the Blues, they took their chances.

Several fans watching Auckland Blues' 22-16 victory over the British and Irish Lions at Eden Park had to be separated after fighting broke out in the stands.

Gatland faced questions from global media in Auckland on Monday night ahead of the team's clash with the Blues at Eden Park on Wednesday.

In another universe, Jared Payne may well have run out to a packed Eden Park on Wednesday as a Blues player - or, in two weeks, as an All Black.

The Lions, despite promising a more attacking style after their grim showing on Saturday against the provincial Barbarians, again looked listless in attack and managed just the single try - and that, via loose forward CJ Stander, was on the back of a driving maul.

With 14 straight wins and 522 points scored, it's fair to say the Lions are set to face a whole new level of rugby sides in three days' time.

They struggled again in a game played at pace and were unable to dictate the pace of the game through their control of possession. He returned to the Blues lineup for this match after a lengthy break with a knee injury and was unaffected by his fast during Ramadan.

Perofeta was handed his first start for the Blues but apart from the pass to Ioane, he struggled to control the match. West added a penalty early in the second period.
