Sai Praneeth reaches final; Saina Nehwal crashes out of Thailand Open

Thailand Open Sai Praneeth Sourabh Verma cruise into third round

While Saina Nehwal faltered in the semifinals, compatriot B. Sai Praneeth progressed to the summit clash of the $120,000 Thailand Open Grand Prix on Saturday.

Third seed Praneeth scored a comfortable 21-11, 21-15 win over Pannawit Thongnuam of Thailand in the men's singles last-four clash that lasted 36 minutes.

Saina started the second game just as she had in the first one winning two points on the spin but the Japanese was in no mood to let the Indian run away with the second game.

Thongnuam came out fighting in the second game and though Praneeth eked out a narrow 6-4 lead, the home favourite levelled things up at 6-6.

After the break, Praneeth kept the pressure on his opponent taking the first three points to go in front 14-7 and even though the Thai managed to win a few points Praneeth managed to seal the first game 21-11.

A little while later, second seed Saina also looked in good nick against Thai fourth seed Busanan Ongbamrungphan. Sai Praneeth, though, was determined to not take the match into the decider and found legs to clinch the next seven points and take a 10-3 lead. However, the London Olympic bronze medallist has not had a good season, barring her Malaysia Masters win earlier this year.

Sai has not lost a single game in this tournament. It was neck and neck for a while after that as both players won points consistently.
