Netflix cancels Sense8, hints at more cancellations to come

"They're awfully scary", Hastings said Wednesday on CNBC's Squawk Box when asked whether the Seattle company, which has recently been investing billions in streaming content that competes directly with Netflix, was his biggest threat. "I mean, everything Amazon does is just so awesome".

It's an excellent PR spin to add the caveat that there are just too many good shows, but the sentiment is still there: Netflix needs to cut back and focus on higher quality. "Because we should have a higher cancel rate overall".

That said, it's not like Netflix only finds super safe shows. "I think the principles of net neutrality are very well accepted by all the large ISPs around the world - not just in the U.S. and in many countries, we don't have net neutrality laws, but we don't have problems either", he advised.

But in January 2016, when T-Mobile's Binge On contravened the principles of net neutrality by selectively exempting Netflix from its data caps, Hastings was all for it.

Hastings said Netflix is spending more money, and its budget is also going to go up in the future.

The comment came after Netflix clashed with the Federation of French Cinemas earlier this month about premiering two of its movies at the Cannes Film Festival. Both shows were very buzzy online and had impressive people behind-the-scenes, with The Matrix's Wachowski siblings working on Sense8 and The Great Gatsby's Baz Luhrmann leading The Get Down.

In the eyes of Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, Amazon.com seems to fall somewhere between horror movie character Freddy Krueger and Chtulhu, the legendary, multi-tentacled monster-god dreamed up by H.P. Lovecraft. According to him, the industry is growing as people want to watch on-demand.

Netflix allocated $6 billion to spend on original content this year and the company wants to increase that budget substantially to maintain its competitiveness in the industry. It was certainly a risk Hastings wants more of, and, although the show did indeed alienate some - Business Insider reports even some mental health experts claim disapprovingly that 13 Reasons Why romanticizes the act of taking one's own life - it turned even more into die-hard fans because they had never seen anything like it made by a professional studio.

France in particular has a rule that states movies that play in theaters must wait three years before they can pop up on a streaming platform. "They're trying to be Walmart. So we are continuing to watch them".

"It is both spoof and amusing", said Hastings of the series, which stars Alison Brie.
