Virender Sehwag Among Contenders For India Coach Amid Row Over Anil Kumble

The three retired India stalwarts will have the uncomfortable task of trying to mediate between two assertive individuals, Kohli and Kumble. He is soft-spoken, more of a backroom man with a pleasing personality. That leaves one to infer that he has had no message, so far.

The Indian cricket board had invited applications for the post on May 25. There were no attempts to douse the avoidable fire. The official said that the reason Kumble has been successful was because "the team has been successful" playing cricket mostly at home.

However, a rant has recently been reported inside the dressing room. The former BCCI president Anurag Thakur had said that a review would be carried out after one year.

What has surprised the BCCI is that Kumble has failed to read these concerns.

BCCI had set May 31 as the deadline to receive applications.

The other two names in the race are of Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid. "The Cricket Advisory Committee is seized with the matter and will deal with it", Choudhary added.

While Kumble is an automatic entry into the selection process, the other main personalities in the fray are Australian Tom Moody and Englishman Richard Pybus.

"You will never have a situation when the captain and coach of any country is on the same page", Gavaskar said. "It can not happen because the coach is invariably somebody who has played in an earlier generation, so their attitude will always be slightly different". Coach should be somebody who is good for Indian cricket. "Yes I have applied for Team India coaching job".

According to a report on India Today, which quotes anonymous sources, some Indian cricketers are up in arms over the former leg-spinner's "overbearing attitude".

Meanwhile, CK Khanna, acting president of BCCI said the Indian board was in constant touch with the ICC.

Gavaskar also questioned the veracity of reports.

Hailing from Delhi, Sehwag has seen Indian skipper Virat Kohli come through the ranks at the capital city and the 28-year-old has time and again spoken of the guidance he had received from Sehwag right from his initial days at the domestic level.

"It might not be something actually happening on the field - it could be something to do with practice sessions or team combinations".

Firstly, when asked about the controversy, veteran batsman Sunil Gavaskar claimed that there's no necessity in the coincidence of the options of both captain and coach, and he dismissed the rift as a natural one, then urged the media not to sensationalize this.
