Apple says payouts from App Store total $70

Since the Apple App Store launched in 2008, app developers have been paid more than $70 billion, the company said Thursday, $20 billion more than the total it announced previous year. Meanwhile, download rates are also said to be up significantly.

That indicates that Apple has raked in some $30 billion in revenue over that time period, given that it typically takes a 30% cut of App Store transactions. The App Store follows a subscription business model and is available to developers across all the app categories.

As for specific categories, Apple has broken that down a little, too.

According to Apple, Gaming and Entertainment apps lead the pack when it comes to earnings, while Lifestyle and Health as well as Fitness apps have seen over 70% growth in the past year. Meanwhile, photo and video are the fastest-growing seeing that app downloads in this category have grown over 90 percent in past year.

Of course, wooing developers to continue putting their apps on the App Store will be a major part of the show's program.


And it doesn't hurt that with Apple getting ready to host its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose on June 5, the company would want to stoke developers' enthusiasm for the gathering.

Apple also pushed back against that notion that apps have peaked and that people aren't downloading as many as the used to.

Developers of apps for iOS earned $20 billion in the past 12 months.

And despite the fact that new smartphone purchases appear to have fallen off a cliff as many large markets reach saturation, growing just three percent in the previous year, there is still a strong motor behind the apps ecosystem. App Annie notes that Apple will generate app revenues of $60 billion, while Google Play will yield $42 billion and other Android stores $36 billion.

The App Store developers from around the world create apps for customers in 155 countries that improve lives, rethink industries and shape culture. With the App Store still rapidly expanding, there's clear incentives for Apple to keep investing in its future. The company said that Super Mario Run has been one of the App Store's biggest hits. In preparation for the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), Apple has recently rolled out the updated WWDC app with a bunch of curated video playlists, a new WWDC theme, and tonnes of interactive street maps. Users are subscribing in huge numbers to various services such as Netflix and Hulu and photo editing apps like Over and Enlight, among other services.
