Coach Luciano Spalletti leaving Roma

"We would like to thank Spalletti for his hard work and his significant contribution since his return", said Roma President Jim Pallotta.

Roma have confirmed the departure of manager Luciano Spalletti two days after finishing Serie A runners up.

"Under the direction of Spalletti Roma last season scored the most points and scored the most goals in a season in the history of the club".

There has been no very close links as to who will replace Spalleti in Roma, but it is clear that the club have been preparing bids for their potential candidate.

Spalletti's second stint as Roma coach began in January 2016.

Roma recovered from the early blow of elimination in the Champions League play-offs to take the Serie A title race until the penultimate day of the season when many expected Juventus to wrap it up much earlier.

The 2016-17 season was another one of progress under the Italian.

Spalletti won the Coppa Italia twice during his first spell at the club, as well as a Supercoppa Italiana, but has faced regular criticism this year over the playing time of club legend Francesco Totti, who retired following a 54th-minute substitute appearance at the weekend. The veteran did impress as an impact substitute late in the season, though.

"I'm leaving a Roma that can look to the future, with some outstanding players", Spalletti said.

"I didn't deserve the whistles", Spalletti said. "Let's take the time to agree on what I should do".

And in an emotionally frank press conference Spalletti was at pains to insist that the team could have done better but for the distraction of the brouhaha surrounding Totti's retirement.

With Totti departed, a new director of football appointed in Monchi and no manager, there are going to be some key decisions to make at Roma.
