US, Japanese leaders agree to enhance sanctions against North Korea: Wh

Cooperation with Russian Federation and China is needed to resolve the crisis around North Korea's nuclear and ballistic missile programs, Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe told a news conference at the end of two-day G7 summit in Taormina, Italy.

"It's a big problem, it's a world problem", he said in the Sicilian town of Taormina, adding the issue would be raised in joint meetings with the other six heads of leading industrialised countries. At some point it will be solved. "You can bet on that", Trump told Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of a Group of Seven summit in Taormina, Italy, Reuters and other news outlets reported.

North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threat is seen as a major security challenge for Mr Trump and Mr Abe both.

By holding the bilateral meeting ahead of the opening of the Group of Seven (G-7) summit, Abe apparently aimed to give the worldwide community the impression that the situation surrounding North Korea is a global challenge worth being discussed as a key agenda at the G-7 summit.

The world leaders agreed with Abe's remarks, and shared a view that the North Korean threat should be regarded as the highest priority among the problems the world is facing.

The US is anxious that if North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un is not stopped, other countries in the region including Japan and South Korea would be compelled to seek their own nuclear capability as a defence measure.

Abe meant to use the summit to underscore the danger posed by the unpredictable regime in North Korea following its recent series of missile tests.

But the statement lacked any explicit pressure on China, North Korea's primary economic and diplomatic benefactor, to do more to impose tougher measures than just an indirect nod, in the form of a request to the "international community" to "redouble its efforts".

"If China feels it is truly on its own (in its dealings with North Korea), it will make a move", he said.

People watch a screen showing news coverage of the Pukguksong-2 missile rocket launch at a public square in central Pyongyang on May 22, 2017.

But the isolated regime has also threatened to target places further afield such as the US West Coast, and Trump has called North Korea's young leader Kim Jong-Un a "madman with nuclear weapons". These tests are claimed to be in violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
