New York Times quotes Trump telling Russians Comey was a 'nut job'

Former FBI Director James Comey has agreed to testify before the Senate Intelligence Committee in an open session.

Did he in fact collude with Russian Federation in his campaign to defeat Democrat Hillary Clinton?

In Washington, the chatter about a deepening, Watergate-style crisis has engulfed the White House - and those conversations are echoed in big cities across the country and in a succession of headlines that seem to suggest nearly certain doom for the young Trump administration. But for many Americans, including President Donald Trump's staunchest supporters, the "crisis in Washington" is not about possible missteps by Trump or questions over whether his campaign colluded with Russian Federation.

During the course of Thursday's press conference, Trump said he fired Comey based on the recommendation made by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

She says it's a "ridiculous statement" for Trump to make and results in "elevating the Russians as his confidante at the expense of our Justice system in our country".

The legal discussions are part of a broader internal effort to bolster the president's legal defense, which has become more complicated with the Justice Department's appointment of a special counsel to pursue the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

In closed-door meetings with lawmakers on Thursday and Friday, Rosenstein said he wrote the memo after Trump told him one day before the May 9 firing that he wanted to dismiss Comey. A couple hours earlier, he had tweeted that the appointment of a special counsel was the "single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history".

Five separate congressional committees are investigating Russia's influence in the 2016 election and if any individual on the Trump campaign of transition colluded with Kremlin officials.

"We'll get rid of the smoke and see where the actual issues lie", said Sen.

"I just fired the head of the F.B.I".

"I never was insane about Trump", J. Brien Comey told USA Today's affiliate in North Jersey.

Trump decried the appointment of the special counsel as "the single greatest witch-hunt" in USA history.

The Justice Department is already reviewing Mueller's background as well as any potential conflicts of interest, said department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores.

The investigation, Issa said, "includes any questions about referrals related to any misconduct, any interference and there were questions well outside the Russian scope". "I hope you can let this go".

The president's tweets drew little reaction from fellow Republicans, who instead joined Democrats in heaping praise on Mueller, a longtime respected lawman who served under George W. Bush and Barack Obama, preceding Comey as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
