FBI chief's unceremonious ouster boomerangs on president

Mr Comey's dismissal sent shockwaves through Washington, with critics accusing the president of trying to thwart the FBI investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the USA election and any Moscow ties to Trump associates.

The latest Russian twist, first reported by the New York Times, comes a week after Mr Trump fired Mr Comey over his handling of the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server while at the state department.

"I hope you can let this go", Comey wrote, quoting the President.

"@GOPoversight is going to get the Comey memo, if it exists".

The White House is disputing a report that President Donald Trump asked former FBI Director James Comey to shut down an investigation into ousted national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Turmoil in the White House in recent weeks has overshadowed Republican legislative priorities such as healthcare and tax reform.

After standing by Donald Trump during the rockiest launch of a presidency in modern times, key Senate Republicans began edging away from him on Tuesday amid new disclosures that he gave top secret intelligence to the Russians, and attempted to tamp down an FBI investigation into his campaign's ties to Russians. "I told him I'd think about it", said Trump in the way a CEO dangles career survival as a bargaining chip. Last week, Trump removed Comey from his post as FBI director and claimed that Comey had told him three times he was not under investigation.

Last week, FBI Deputy Director McCabe told a Congressional in a testimony that the White House had not interfered with any investigation. He reportedly bribed the burglars, tried to stop the FBI from investigating the robbery, destroyed all evidence, and fired uncooperative staff members as well.

Testifying before Congress is familiar to Comey, a former Justice Department official in the George W. Bush administration.

The euro surged more than 1 percent against the dollar on Tuesday, rising to its highest since Trump was elected president in November.

At almost 18 times forward earnings, the S&P 500 trades at a significant premium to its long-term average valuations of 15 times, according to Thomson Reuters data.

First and foremost, although he continues to call the investigation and the Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential election, confirmed by every level of USA intelligence community, a hoax, the president has spent an enormous amount of energy and time defending himself.

Senate foreign relations chairman Robert Corker said on Monday that the White House was "in a downward spiral".

The usually circumspect Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell, said on Tuesday morning that the party needed "less drama" from the president.

The concerns surrounding the White House may slow economic-policy decisions, according to Westpac Banking Corp., which recommends investors short the dollar. The Flynn investigation was part of the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

King said Congress needs to gather all the facts before drawing conclusions.

U.S. Representative Barbara Comstock, a Republican, called for a closed-door briefing for lawmakers.

"Quite simply put, sir, you can not stop the men and women of Federal Bureau of Investigation from doing the right thing, protecting the American people and upholding the Constitution", McCabe said in response to a question from Sen. Granted, one might think he would care when USA interests (and perhaps lives) are on the line, but we've seen no evidence of that; that "officials expressed concern with Trump's handling of sensitive information as well as his grasp of the potential consequences" is consistent with everything we've seen from him in the campaign, during the transition and after he took office.

Obstruction of justice cases often come down to whether prosecutors can prove defendants' mental state when they committed the act, legal specialists said.

The same thing is true now that's been true from the start: As unsuited as Trump is for office, his weaknesses could at least be minimized if he were forced to accept a professional presidential staff structure.

Democratic senator Richard Blumenthal, a member of the judiciary committee, called the memo as reported "powerful evidence of obstruction of justice".

"We need a special prosecutor to conduct an independent investigation", Sanders said.
