Australia could ban laptops on global flights

Turnbull has not indicated if the ban is being actively considered or any timeframe for a decision.

Malcolm Turnbull, the prime minister, said his government was looking "very closely" at introducing a ban on the devices, as President Trump did in March for direct flights from eight Muslim-majority countries.

"We're working very closely with our partners and, in due course, any announcements will be made formally through the Transport Minister", he said.

Australia is one of the largest contributors to the US-led mission against IS in the Middle East and shares highly classified intelligence material with the country as part of the Five Eyes agreement.

This would strongly suggest that Australia will impose a similar ban that has affected inbound USA flights from 10 airports in Muslim-majority nations, although at this stage nothing has been confirmed.

At the time of the initial United States announcement, the government said it had no plans for such a change.

"The government continuously monitors shifts in the threat environment domestically and overseas to ensure we have the best security arrangements in place to meet the challenges we face", Minister Chester said.

Australia is mulling a ban on laptops in the cabins of inbound commercial passenger flights, amid global concerns about a new terrorist threat.

But the security and safety issues of bundling the devices in the cargo hold of aircraft is also being weighed up.
