John Oliver demands Congress intervene after Donald Trump fires James Comey

"Do you remember normal weeks?", said John Oliver at the start of his Sunday night episode.

In case you hadn't heard, Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last Tuesday after ordering Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein to write letters arguing for his dismissal. "We're paying for a fully loaded Lamborghini and receiving a drunk donkey on roller skates", Oliver said. One of the largest for-profit kidney dialysis companies in the U.S.is the Denver-based company, DaVita, and Oliver spent a long time looking at complaints against them. Trump posted last week, after sharing his version of his conversations with Comey in an NBC interview with Lester Holt. Oliver asked after rolling a clip of Trump explaining why he fired Comey-and mentioning Russian Federation in the process. Oliver replied to Trump. "I was thinking of the Russian Federation investigation when I fired Comey" is the one thing that you are not supposed to say out loud!" Oliver pointed out, explaining that it led him to ask three questions. Two, does he really think we as a country are this stupid?

The host then called out GOP Speaker of the House Paul Ryan for refusing to answer questions about the firing.

Pointing to Trump's admission of firing Comey due to the Russian Federation investigation, and his subsequent Twitter threat to Comey about these "tapes", Oliver is now telling Congress to get involved.

After quickly going through other Trump/Comey news from the week, including a "threatening" Tweet about revealing tapes, Oliver called on Congress to do something.

"The point is", Oliver concluded, "the founding fathers created a system of checks and balances to limit the power of the president".

"They do have options", he continued, mentioning the ongoing congressional investigations into possible collusion between members of the Trump campaign and Russian officials. "When you've got the presidential equivalent of a 5-year-old sh***ing on the salad bar of a Ruby Tuesdays, at some point you stop blaming the 5-year-old, and you start blaming the people who aren't stopping him".
