Trump tells Abbas 'very good chance' of Israeli-Palestinian peace

In fact, in President Trump's opinion, making peace is "something that, I think, is frankly maybe not as hard as people have thought over the years".

Shortly before the White House meeting, a senior Palestinian official said Abbas would stop paying for electricity in Gaza and "dry up" the flow of funds to Hamas.

"There can be no lasting peace unless the Palestinian leaders speak in a unified voice against incitement to violate, and violence, and hate", the president said. In a meeting with Romanian Prime Minister Sorin Grindaunu, Netanyahu stressed that he is always ready for true and genuine peace but he attacked Abbas, who he emphasized falsely claimed that he is educating Palestinian children for peace. The Palestinian leader and his advisers are weighing efforts to restart peace negotiations with Israel with the aim of securing Palestinian borders, a capital and a state.

"Let's see if we can find a solution". The American leader brushed aside the entire complex of different cobwebs of the decades-old conflict and pointed to talk Abbas that together with the Israelis they could bag "the toughest deal to make".

In his own speech, Abbas focused on specific demands that the PA will be sticking to in regard to the possibility of peace with Israel: namely, that Israel returns to its 1967 borders, that Israel end the "50-year" occupation and that a two-state solution be considered with Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state.

Here at the White House, President Abbas signed a Declaration of Principles - very important - which laid the foundation for peace between the Israelis and Palestinians.

Nasser Lahham, editor-in-chief of Bethlehem-based news site Ma'an News Agency, wrote that Abbas did not bring anything new to the White House in terms of demands.

Trump s long-shot effort to bring Middle East peace got off to a rocky start when he appeared to back away from supporting a Palestinian state and vowed to move the USA embassy to Jerusalem, breaking two tenets of American policy held for decades.

Palestinians will strongly disapprove if Mahmoud Abbas concedes to Trump's request and the protesters in Ramallah said that they do not understand the United States president's request.

Few were surprised that the first words out of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas' mouth in his meeting with US President Donald Trump were bald-faced lies.

President Trump says he's eager to facilitate, mediate and arbitrate a deal, but ultimately the solution must come from the Israeli and Palestinian people.

Sources in the State Department told Reuters that plans for a visit to Mr Netanyahu in Jerusalem later this month, and possibly Mr Abbas in Ramallah, are being firmed up.

"An honor to host President Mahmoud Abbas at the WH today", read the tweet.

The movement Freedom and Dignity is struggling for better conditions for the 6,200 Palestinians prisoners in Israel.

In his Wednesday comments, Abbas also criticized ideas for a "one state" peace agreement, saying it could mean "racial discrimination" or an apartheid-like system.
