Nostalgic horror sensation "Stranger Things" and Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" shared the spoils Sunday at the MTV Movie and TV Awards, expanded and renamed this year to include television.

She added that the award in years to come will mean something different to everyone.

Emma Watson got quite a thrill out of being the inaugural victor of MTV's best actor in a movie award.

Emma Watson had high praise for MTV's move to remove gender qualifiers for its Movie and TV Awards.

And the significance of gender non-binary actor Asia Kate Dillon presenting the award to Watson was not lost on the actress: "Empathy and the ability to use your imagination should have no limits". The red carpet outside Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium was a swamp as luminaries made their water-logged arrival for the shindig.

"The first acting award in history that doesn't separate nominees based on their sex says something about how we perceive the human experience", she said. In the ceremony's other gender-neutral acting categories, "The Walking Dead" star Jeffrey Dean won for best villain ahead of Allison Williams in "Get Out" and Jared Leto in "Suicide Squad".

In an Instagram video shared after the ceremony, she thanked her fans and poked a little fun at herself for crying nearly uncontrollably during her acceptance speech.

"This is very meaningful to me", she said.

Daniel Kaluuya and Milton "Lil Rel" Howery, the stars of surprise smash hit thriller "Get Out", got the prizes for "next generation" and best comedic performance respectively.

In total, the streaming platform scored eight nominations at the MTV Movie and TV Awards, including four for Stranger Things.

Get Out co-stars Allison Williams, left, and Lil Rel Howery present the award for best kiss at the MTV Movie and TV Awards.

The eighth "Fast and Furious" movie co-stars Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson and Jordana Brewster took the stage to accept the award.

Netflix also took home a third award last night when director Ava DuVernay's documentary about racial inequality in America, 13th, won for Best Documentary. "I love playing someone who didn't listen to any of that", Watson said onstage as she accepted the award.
