Microsoft's Xamarin Live Player speeds up iOS app development

Microsoft: Windows 10 Is Running on 500 Million Devices

Instead of installing gigabytes of SDKs and emulators to get started, developers can get started with Android and iOS development with just a physical iOS or Android device and Visual Studio.

Microsoft has announced that you can now develop, build, deploy, and debug iOS apps directly from a Windows 10 PC, no Mac needed. For iOS development, however, there has always been an extra complication: the actual software building and deployment had to take place on a Mac. Quickly scan the QR code with the Xamarin Live Player app and you're ready to instantly run your app, live on your device. "It goes from being kind of a sixty-second thing to five minutes or seven minutes, and suddenly, it's slowing you down". Visual Studio remotely controls the Apple machine to do this work, so although developers can stay inside the Visual Studio environment they know and love, they still need a Mac on their local network. Xamarin Live Player even allows you to set break points.

Microsoft is making it easier for developers to develop iOS and Android apps on Windows PCs using the new Xamarin Live Player.

Microsoft finally released Visual Studio for Mac during the Build developer conference in Seattle May 10, almost half a year after releasing a preview version of the developer toolkit in New York City.

Using Live Run, developers no longer have to compile a program every time they want to see how a design change will look on a device. The feature doesn't provide a full, live app experience, but it's created to be a useful way to iterate on fine details. Visual Studio for Mac is a new member of the Visual Studio family, enabling developers on macOS to build apps for mobile, web, and cloud with Xamarin and.NET Core, as well as games with Unity. Xamarin Live Player removes that requirement and instead asks you for an iPhone and Visual Studio 2017 for Windows. The new XAML, XAML Standard, will allow XAML to be shared (and copy/pasted, the best kind of code reuse) between UWP and Xamarin Forms apps.
