Sharapova more disappointed to lose early than to detractor

The plan should eat into the country’s jet fuel exports which rose to a record of 7,41,000 tonnes in March according to preliminary government data

"I wanted to do it for myself, but also for all these people".

Bouchard, who had previously called the Russian a "cheater," won in three sets to advance to the third round where she will play against top seed Angelique Kerber who survived a scare against rising star Katerina Siniakova in the second round. She is provisionally up to 210 in the rankings and has 250 rankings points since taking to the courts a couple of Wednesdays ago.

"I feel like I'm like a broken-record player, but these tournaments are really important, " Sharapova said. I know that I can comeback and win matches like that when I'm down.

Eugenie Bouchard beat Maria Sharapova yesterday evening in Madrid with the sort of confident performance that saw her reach the Wimbledon final in 2014. And from that point on, it was clear that Sharapova was going to give Bouchard her chances. That is what is going to make me a better player.

Sharapova, the 2014 victor in Madrid, had 16 winners and only 10 unforced errors in her opening-round victory, her fourth since a controversial return to tennis.

Bouchard has been unseeded at the tournament and Sharapova on the other hand was given a wildcard.

And the Canadian said she would have "a bit more motivation" against her former idol Sharapova after registering a first win on the WTA Tour since January against Alize Cornet on Saturday to set up the grudge match. Most players were against her receiving free entry without having to qualify.

"I feel like it's still a learning experience, and it's still just getting back in the groove and understanding what I need to work on and improve, " she said. But unlike in the first two sets, it was Bouchard who managed to snag the first break, finally able to convert her ninth break point of the set in the seventh game to move within two games of recording her first victory over the two-time Roland Garros champion.

Sharapova then lost a 12-minute service game as Bouchard broke and the Canadian eventually took the opening set 7-5 after 70 minutes.

But with her trademark fighting spirit in tow, Sharapova refused to go down quietly, breaking back nearly immediately to draw level at four-games-all with two hours and 38 minutes on the clock.

Eugenie Bouchard of Canada defeated Maria Sharapova of Russian Federation on day three of the Mutua Madrid Open tennis at La Caja Magica on May 8, 2017 in Madrid, Spain.

At the time it seemed like it might be pivotal, but Sharapova broke back immediately for 4-all. "That's how I treat this game", Sharapova said. "So I want to at least take advantage of that, just go for it, play good tennis, build on this, and enjoy it, kind of just show what I can do".

Bouchard prevailed in the end, and their handshake at the net was cordial, with Sharapova saying "well played".

Second-seeded Karolina Pliskova was upset in the second round, falling to Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia 6-3, 6-3.
