Texas Cop Who Shot And Killed Teen Has Been Fired

The above photo is Roy Oliver, the now-former Balch Springs police officer accused of shooting 15-year old Jordan Edwards on Saturday night.

Edwards and his 16-year-old brother were heading home from a house party in the Dallas suburb when the officer - responding to noise complaints - shot the fatal head-wound shot through the window of the vehicle.

Edwards' death is one of dozens of shootings in recent years of men and women who were inside moving vehicles at the time they were shot, even after decades of urging from policing experts and reformers nationwide that departments ban officers from opening fire on moving vehicles. But during the departmental investigation Chief Haber said video contradicted that information and that the vehicle was driving away from Officer Oliver when he fired his weapon.

Haber initially said after the shooting that Oliver fired on the auto when the driver backed toward officers "in an aggressive manner".

"You have my assurances that my department will continue to be responsive, transparent and accountable", Chief Haber said.

The Dallas County district attorney's public integrity unit, and the Dallas County Sheriff's Department are reviewing the case.It is unclear if there will be criminal charges against Oliver.

Per the Associated Press, attorneys for the family, Lee Merritt and Jasmine Crockett, praised the police department for its quick action to fire the officer. Oliver fired an unknown number of rounds from a rifle into the moving auto, striking 15-year-old Jordan Edwards.

There is no word on whether Oliver, a white police officer, will be arrested for the shooting death of Jordan Edwards.

Roy Oliver, a six-year veteran of the department, fatally shot the 15-year-old honor student in the head while he was attempting to leave a house party over the weekend. "The lone motive they had for the murder was that the vehicle was being used as a weapon, and now that is no longer there".

"The officers who extended this nightmare for those children ought to be properly reprimanded, as well", the family said.

Edwards' family will hold the teen's funeral on Saturday. Jordan's older brother who was driving the auto was detained overnight without reason and didn't learn of his brother's death until the next day.

He acknowledged then that the auto was moving away from officers when Oliver fired the shots and said the officer's actions were not consistent with the department's "core values".

"Our family is working hard to deal with both the loss of our beloved Jordan and the lingering trauma it has caused our boys", the family statement said. "That was exclusively on me".

"I would encourage the Balch Springs Police Department to continue to display the transparency and accountability this sensitive situation demands, including reporting the details of this awful incident to the Texas Attorney General as state law requires". "Not only have Jordan's brothers lost their best friend, they witnessed firsthand his violent, senseless murder".
