Mugabe: Zimbabwe Second Most Developed Nation in Africa

Speaking during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum on Africa at the International Convention Centre in Durban, Mugabe said: "We are not a poor country and we can't be a fragile country, I can call America fragile, they went with their knees to China".

PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe has scoffed at insinuations that Zimbabwe is in crisis and instead boldly declared the country's economy is second only to South Africa on the continent. "Yes, we have our problems. but we have resources, perhaps more than the average country. and our agriculture is very viable and this year we will have a bumper harvest", Mugabe said, highlighting the nation's production of "maize, tobacco, many other crops".

Twitter responded to his remarks in customary Twitter style: memes. We are not a poor country", he said, adding that "if anyone wants to call us fragile, they can.

However, his claims infuriated opposition parties and ordinary Zimbabweans - who are struggling daily to make ends meet, as they sleep in bank queues trying to withdraw their hard-earned money.

In 2016, Zimbabwe was the 16th most fragile state in the Fragile States Index out of 178 states surveyed.

Zimbabwe's population is actually about 1 percent Muslim, and it has an Islamic Welfare Organization, which Newsweek notes has not yet responded to Mugabe's comments. We can't be fragile country.

When asked if Zimbabwe is a fragile country, the president laughed and answered: "That's not true". "We have over 90 percent formal unemployment", he said. We are a fragile State fast drifting to a failed one.

Ironically, his admission that Zimbabwe has resources in abundance fits into the "resource curse" description which says that countries with an abundance of natural resources tend to have less economic growth, less democracy, and worse development outcomes than those with fewer natural resources. "Mugabe has to know this reality", Saungweme said.
