Google agrees to pay $335 million in Italy tax dispute

Google agrees to pay Italy €306 million in taxes

Last year Google also agreed to pay the Treasury £130m for around ten years of underpaid taxes in the United Kingdom, in a deal announced by the then-Chancellor George Osborne which was widely criticised as being too lenient.

"With Google a process will be kicked off to come up with preventive agreements for correct taxation in Italy in the future for operations that regard our country", the tax office said.

"Google and the Italian Revenue Agency have reached a settlement, resolving a tax inquiry for a period between 2002 and 2015 without litigation", a Google spokesman said in an emailed statement. "Google confirms its commitment to Italy and will continue to work to help grow the online ecosystem of the country".

American lawmakers, meanwhile, are demanding that US-based multinationals repatriate more of their profits and pay taxes on them.

Italy has also begun proceedings against Amazon, which it estimates could owe taxes on €130 million misappropriated funds.Pressure from the European Commission has heaped pressure on technology giants to pay back taxes avoided since the year 2000 by moving income in countries such as Ireland and Luxembourg. The U.S. tech giant agreed to pay $334 million in back taxes to the Italian government the latest settlement for a tech company in the Eurozone. The biggest controversy on European soil concerns the record amount of $ 14.2 billion, a tax that Ireland has ordered to demand from Apple. The payment was made to cover unpaid taxes in the country from 2008 to 2013. France's finance minister Michel Sapin said a year ago that he won't negotiate a deal with Google, but will instead pursue legal action.

While changes to the tax system are at an early stage in Washington, some European policy makers worry that such repatriation would allow USA companies to avoid paying their fair share of tax in Europe, an accusation that tech industry officials reject.

The French government said it wanted to make it more attractive for foreign businesses looking for a new European location after Brexit.
