Android users can now use Instagram offline

Android users rejoice. Not just YouTube you can now ‘go offline’ on Instagram too

Instagram is now testing offline support for the Instagram Android app, as revealed at the Facebook F8 developer conference held yesterday (via TechCrunch). The popular image sharing platform now has offline support on Android, but it's understandably very limited.

An Instagram engineer explained that most of its offline functionality is actually already available on Android, but the goal is to allow users to see content in the Instagram feed that has previously loaded, leave comments, like items, save media, and even unfollow people. Interaction with said posts will also be possible, in the form of likes and comments.

80 per cent of Instagram's users are outside of the U.S. - many in emerging markets where the cellular internet can be slower.

While Twitter, Facebook serves it's own goal, Instagram works on its own to a specific set of audience.

Instagram has announced that it's adding offline support to its Android app. More offline features are expected to be rolled out in the coming months. When a data connection is re-established, the actions made will be uploaded to Instagram's servers. Next time you connect to the internet, that section will update automatically.

The engineering gymnastics required to do this could help Instagram grow in developing nations where data is either too expensive for everyone to afford, or there aren't omnipresent or stable data connections. The company launched a lighter version of Facebook, called Facebook Lite in 2015, which uses less data for letting users access the social network. Google Play Music uses artificial intelligence to cache music it believes you will like.
