Woman arrested in killing of N. Korean leader's half brother

Kim Jong Nam fell out of favour with the North Korean hierarchy following a botched attempt in 2001 to enter Japan on a forged passport

Police in Malaysia told Reuters yesterday that an unidentified DPRK man had died en route to hospital from Kuala Lumpur airport on Monday.

This image provided by Star TV on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017, of closed circuit television footage from Monday, Feb 13, 2017, shows a woman, left, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in Sepang, Malaysia, who police say was arrested Wednesday in connection with the death of Kim Jong Nam, the half brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Even as Japanese news agency Kyodo, citing a Japanese government official, reported that the women may "already be dead", Malaysian police yesterday arrested a woman holding Vietnam travel papers. The officials including the ambassador demand the body's handover, with no autopsy.

Said Mr Fadzil: "He asked for help and was immediately sent to the airport's clinic".

South Korea's acting President and Prime Minister held a National Security Council meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss the death, according to a statement released by the Blue House.

Reports surfaced that Kim Jong Nam fell from favor from the ruling family after he was caught trying to sneak a visit to Tokyo Disneyland using a forged document in 2001 - an assertion that one journalist who spoke to Kim countered in a 2012 book.

"The news about Kim Jong-nam will be put out either through loudspeaker broadcasts or the radio, where senior officials are sure to feel their lives are threatened by the fact that Kim Jong-un killed a family member".

Kim Jong Nam and Kim Jong Un are both sons of former leader Kim Jong Il, who died in late 2011, but they had different mothers. "We do not know his identity", Abdul said.

China is North Korea's main ally.

"It seems probable that the motivation for the murder was a continuing sense of paranoia on the part of Kim Jong Un, which may be a well-placed paranoia", Mr Tokola wrote in a commentary overnight. Some reports also say that Kim Jong-nam may have been involved in recent political changes within the regime.

"Personally, I am against third-generation succession", he told Japan's Asahi TV in 2010, before his younger had succeeded their father.

The passport found on Mr Kim identified him as Kim Chol, a 46-year-old from North Korea.

He was probably not viewed as a direct threat to his half brother, but as "an obstacle to Kim Jong Un's plan to maintain the regime for the next 20 to 30 years", the professor said.
