New Jersey ranks 29th on list of number of structurally deficient bridges

Report More than 1,200 Michigan bridges falling apart

Once again, Pennsylvania is among the nation's leaders in structurally deficient bridges, according to an annual report.

The American Road and Transportation Builders Association's list of 55,710 deficient bridges includes high-profile structures such as Throgs Neck in New York, Yankee Doodle in CT and Memorial Bridge in Washington D.C., the report said.

A new report says the Brooklyn Bridge and Washington's Arlington Memorial Bridge are among thousands of spans across the US considered structurally deficient.

That's good for second behind Iowa, which again led the annual report with 4,968, also an improvement for the state from a year ago.

Bridges labeled structurally deficient aren't necessarily in immediate danger of collapse. The bridge was classified as both "structurally deficient" and "fracture critical" in federal data for 2012. The part of I-95 that covers Olde Richmond and Fishtown was the most traveled in the state, with 208,978 daily crossings.

The ARTBA/federal data is the most recent available, but there have been instances in the past when a bridge that made the list already had been repaired. While the bridges might not be immediately unsafe, ARTBA says they do need attention.

The report is produced annually and by comparing 2016 to 2015's National Bridge Inventory, ARTBA found that progress has been slow in repairing bridges. In the District, 3.7 percent of 245 bridges are in need; in Maryland, it's 5.8 percent of 5,321 bridges; in Virginia, it's 6.7 percent of 13,892 bridges.

Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said during her confirmation hearing that the highway trust fund is "a huge issue" because it spends $10 billion more each year than it collects.

The 2017 Bridge report also offers specific information, including rankings of the 250 most heavily travelled structurally deficient bridges in the nation and the 25 most heavily traveled in each state.
