People who stood at banks will now queue to reject BJP: Akhilesh

The Muslim vote is getting divided mainly between Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party because people want security

Voting began in India's most populous state on Saturday in what is widely viewed as a mid-term barometer test for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Gandhi, along with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, was speaking to reporters after releasing a common minimum programme of the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance for the polls, when he launched the attack.

The PM also evoked Chaudhary Charan Singh in an attempt to pacify the Jats who have strong reservations about the BJP-led government at the Centre, adding that the Congress had left no stone unturned in insulting the veteran leader.

Sharma, however, said that the district administration had fully cooperated with them and that they had not denied them permission.

He also said that if SP retains power in UP, it would work on improving law and order in the state.

"The United States of America had recently Donald Trump in the seat but India had a Trump in the form of Modi two-and-a- half years earlier", he said.

Polls are being held in five states, but none is more crucial to the political fortunes of Modi as Uttar Pradesh.

#Why is the Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh sheltering criminals?

Mr Akhilesh Yadav also joined the Congress vice- president in attacking the Prime Minister. While addressing a jam-packed rally PM Modi said that if he would have visited the place in 2014, voters would have changed their decision.

But some observers said the BJP's failure to put forward a local face could backfire, as it did in the neighbouring state of Bihar in 2015.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is the son of Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, founder of the Samajwadi Party.

"Why are they so angry with me?.Mayawati and Mulayam Singh who were opposed to each other, came together on one issue when I waged a war on black money as they found that the ground was slipping under their feet", Modi said.

On Nov. 8 previous year, in a sudden televised address to the nation, Modi announced the demonetization of higher denomination currency notes to curb black money and the circulation of fake currency notes among terrorists.
