4 killed, 108 injured in Surigao quake as aftershocks continue

A STATE of calamity was declared in Surigao City and the province of Surigao del Norte on Saturday following a 6.7-magnitude quake Friday night, killing six people and injuring 126 others.

According to the regional disaster management office, the runway at Surigao city airport was damaged, prompting the cancellation of flights.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Saturday, February 11 offered condolences to victims of the 6.7 magnitude quake that hit Surigao City and Surigao del Norte on Friday night which killed 6 people and injured over 100 others. "Many areas do not have electricity, and the airport has been closed".

Surigao City is known for Basul Island, Ipil-Mabua Pebble Beach, and Zaragoza Rock Formations among other destinations.

One bridge collapsed and two others were damaged.

According to local officials, for people have been confirmed dead while more than 100 people were left injured following the quake.

Andanar said the reported casualties, damage to properties, and injuries are now undergoing validation.


Village leaders asked residents to move to a school building on higher ground, officals said.

"The shaking was so strong I could hardly stand", coast guard personnel Rayner Neil Elopre said by phone.

The Philippines is situated in the so-called Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The last major quake that struck Surigao, an impoverished region also dealing with a communist insurgency, was in the 1800s, said Renato Solidum, head of the Philippines' seismic agency.

In 2013, 222 victims were killed and centuries-old buildings churches were destroyed in a powerful magnitude-7.2 quake that struck the central province of Bohol.
