PCCW shares surge on sale of United Kingdom broadband business to CK Hutchison

Three will get a spectrum boost from £250m UK Broadband deal

Owned by CK Hutchison Holdings, and boasting stakes in mobile operations in Australia, Austria, Denmark, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Macau, Sri Lanka, Sweden and Vietnam, Three is the youngest of the UK's major mobile carriers, setting up as late as when 3G came to the United Kingdom, subsequently reeling in users with cheap unlimited or high-cap data plans. This spectrum can not now be used for mobile services, but has been earmarked as possible bands for 5G services.

In addition to the purchase price, a deferred £50m will be made available by Three as a credit towards the establishment of a mobile virtual network operator on Three's mobile network.

Relish has been working hard to crack the UK fixed wireless market making use of the band it holds the licence for in the 3.5 GHz and 3.6 GHz bands and it looks likely that this band has convinced three to pay some £250m for Relish who are otherwise known as UK Broadband in the UK.

The deal will help Three grow its spectrum capacity which might come in handy for launching 5G services in the future.

Home-Fi launched across 135 stores based in non-congested areas of the mobile operator's network, and sees a router connected using a SIM for connectivity.

Three UK has reached an agreement to acquire UK Broadband Limited.

In the campaign, Three accused BT and Vodafone of harming competition by holding on to a high proportion of spectrum, some of which the Hutchison subsidiary claims is being left unused.

Since being refused permission to buy O2, Three has been lobbying hard for Ofcom to address the perceived unbalanced distribution of spectrum in the UK.

Mann said: "Although Three will acquire new spectrum, the acquired band is not compatible with most of today's mobile devices, meaning that it can not be put to immediate use".

The Relish brand is probably the most well-known element of UK Broadband's offerings, providing high-speed internet via 4G frequencies, removing the need for fixed connections to achieve coverage.

"Three remains in a precarious position as a mobile-only provider in a United Kingdom market rapidly evolving to multiplay services", he said.
