'Sharkwater' documentary director Rob Stewart found dead

The desperate search for Toronto filmmaker and conservationist Rob Stewart continues Thursday after he went missing during a scuba dive off the Florida coast Tuesday evening

He took the deepest dive, resurfaced and gave an Ok signal to the crew, but his partner began to lose consciousnesses.

"This century we're facing some pretty catastrophic consequences of our actions", Rob Stewart said several years before his death.

Earlier in the evening, the US Coast Guard announced that it had suspended the search for Stewart.

The U.S. Coast Guard will suspend their search for a missing Canadian documentary filmmaker in the Atlantic, off the Florida Keys, at sunset, Friday.

Rob Stewart is seen free diving with Caribbean reef sharks near Freeport, Bahamas.

"The body was reportedly recovered late in the afternoon", Marilyn Fajardo, a spokeswoman for the Coast Guard's Seventh District, told AFP.

In the wake of his disappearance, support flooded in for the missing filmmaker.

Stewart's team is fundraising and looking for volunteers via Stewart's Twitter account to continue the search. The person organizing the page said any leftover money would be given to Fin Free, a charitable organization that works for the protection of sharks.

Stewart's parents, Brian and Sandy Stewart, flew from Toronto with their son-in-law and were staying in the Keys during the search Wednesday and Thursday. It prompted people around the world to lobby their governments for bans on shark finning.

Rob Stewart was filming a sequel to "Sharkwater" when he died. Rob Stewart also directed and produced the 2012 documentary Revolution, which focused on other threats to the environment. He said the boat crew lost sight of Stewart as they were turning around to pick him up.

People searching for a missing shark documentary director have appealed for help from "anyone who has access to planes, helicopters, drones or boats". "So it's going to be a really dramatic century unless we do something about it".
