Gavin McInnes speaking at NYU, protests underway

Multiple Arrests Made As Protests Erupt At NYU Over Speech Given By Gavin McInnes

An angry woman identifying herself as a professor screamed and cussed out the NYPD at a New York University protest Thursday night because they didn't "kick the ass" of a conservative speaker. and because they arrested those who did attack him.

Demonstrators gathered outside the school's Kimmel Center on W. 4th St.to voice concerns about an appearance by conservative comedian and Vice Media co-founder Gavin McInnes.

The speech, which was cut short, was organized by the NYU College Republicans.

Police those arrested face charges including criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

Once McInnes was in the building, protesters followed and chanted as he tried to speak.

McInnes said he was pepper-sprayed when entering the student center, which prompted the first melee to break out between his followers and protesters. "Isn't that fantastic? You're spending, well your parents are spending, 30K a semester to make you stupider", McInnes had told the crowd attending the lecture. The event description, which has since been taken down, encouraged students to join them to "let NYU know that we will not stand for bigotry, racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny on our campus", the NYU Local reported.

In December, McInnes launched a group called the Proud Boys.

NY police officers stepped in to form a barrier between the protesters and McInnes supporters. He was met with several protesters rushing him and unruly chants.

A photo uploaded to Twitter showed a "Make America Great Again" burning in front of the building.

"We have freedom of speech in this country, however if you're going to promote something that is hateful and hurtful to our democracy, we have a right to come out and explain why our democracy exists", said another.
