Ford Shipping F-150 Raptors to China

Ford has taken its super-truck, the 2017 F-150 Raptor, to China, cashing in on the growing appetite there for unusual Americana. But Chinese truck enthusiasts for years have purchased the truck on the gray market outside of authorized dealers, typically paying as much as four times the US sticker price for the vehicle.

It's unclear how many Chinese buyers will take the F-150 Raptor off-road and put its legitimately-impressive talents to the test, and how many are simply swayed - like, quite probably, a fair proportion of American Raptor buyers - by the truck's meaty design. Ford had previously discontinued the truck in 2014.

The exported second-generation F-150 Raptor is a four-door SuperCrew model that includes a military-grade aluminum-alloy cab and a high-output version of its 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine. Raptors also get a Ford Performance-engineered high-strength steel frame, Fox Racing shocks with higher ground clearance, BF Goodrich off-road tires and performance exhaust system. Well, the improvements to not stop there as the 2017 Ford Raptor was born with a massive torque reading of 510 lb-ft.

Because of the big price increase, it makes sense for Ford to export the Raptor to China rather than a more ordinary F-150.

Chinese consumers are just weeks away from being able to buy a Raptor, the 2017 models of which are being shipped to the country, now the world's largest automotive market.

According to David Schoch, head of Ford Asia Pacific, the vehicle has "generated wonderful buzz" every time it's been shown.

The F-Series truck joins the Ford GT, Focus RS, Focus ST and Fiesta ST on the current roster of exports to China.

F-150 Raptor is one of more than 12 new Ford Performance vehicles coming by 2020.
