Ulster County Building to Highlight 'National Wear Red Day'

Israeli Doctors Save Gaza Boy's Heart

The leading cause of death for women in America is heart disease.

According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women, and a staggering 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.

A special Go Red for Women fashion show at the luncheon will feature original fashions in red created by student designers from Texas Woman's University and the University of North Texas Fashion Design Departments. Volunteers knitted the red hats themselves and have delivered them to metropolitan hospitals for the babies to wear. By going red, we remind women, and all of us, about the importance of taking care of our hearts. In 2002, the AHA established National Wear Red Day to raise awareness for women's heart disease. Select a favorite outfit in red and register by February 9 to attend the Go Red for Women event.

The fashion choice is part of American Heart Association Little Hats, Big Hearts program, which raises awareness about heart disease. Sanford Health, El Riad Shriners and the American Heart Association are all teaming up to put it on. The website reports almost 90 percent of women have made at least one healthy behavior change, and more than one-third of women have lost weight.

Your youth also doesn't excuse you from more "traditional" heart issues like heart attacks, clogged arteries, and strokes. Today, almost 300 fewer women die from heart disease and stroke, each day. "We aim to empower women and men through our health screenings, demos and education on how to take control of their heart health and make positive, healthy changes".

Women who are involved with the Go Red For Women movement live healthier lives.
