Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said he would not attend a planned January 31 meeting with President Donald Trump after Trump tweeted Thursday that Mexico should cancel if it is "unwilling to pay for the badly needed wall".
President Donald Trump will seek a tax on goods imported from Mexico and use the revenue to build a border wall, the White House spokesman has said.
But Trump has been reluctant to describe how the United States would pay to build the wall, outside of saying he would make Mexico foot the bill.
It comes a day after the US President signed an executive order giving the construction of the wall the go ahead.
The import tax plan would "easily" fund the wall, Spicer said.
The White House initially said Thursday that Trump wanted to slap a 20 percent tax on all imports from Mexico.
"I regret and reject the decision of the U.S.to build the wall", he said. "Clearly provides funding, does so that the American taxpayer is respected", he said.
During the presidential campaign, he regularly assailed USA manufacturers who have set up shop in Mexico to take advantage of cheap labor and a liberal trade regimen.
Trump also made renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement a major talking point, insisting that Mexico takes economic advantage of the United States.
But later, the White House said the idea was just one of several options on the table for paying for a wall along the southern border.
"We'll be reimbursed at a later date from whatever transaction we make from Mexico", he said.
Mr Spicer said the President's directives on immigration would also end the practice dubbed "catch and release" by critics, in which authorities apprehend illegal immigrants on USA territory but do not immediately detain or support them. The U.S.is, in fact, on its way to reaching Trump's claim, MarketWatch reported. Trump views the wall, a major part of his election campaign, as part of a package of measures to curb illegal immigration.
Mexico's peso, which has fallen sharply against the US dollar in the face of Trump's stances on trade and immigration, extended losses to 1 percent after Pena Nieto fired off his tweet. Those U.S.jobs could be jeopardized if trade halts along the U.S. -Mexico border, which reportedly happened when U.S. Customs and Border Protection turned away 100 tons of Mexican avocados Wednesday.
