John Hurt, 'Alien' and 'The Elephant Man' Star, Dies At 77

The formidable and distinguished actor had battled pancreatic cancer in 2015 and passed away on Wednesday at his home in Norfolk. Hurt made his film debut in THE WILD AND THE WILLING, and his role as baron Richard Rich in Oscar best picture victor A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS made him well-known in the U.S. This ultimately led to additional parts in television and movies - including his Golden Globe and BAFTA-winning role in 1978's Midnight Express, for which he also scored his first Academy Award nomination.

Hurt has starred in some of the most memorable films of all time, including Alien and the Harry Potter series.

Survived by his wife of 12 years, Anwen Rees-Myers, he recently starred as a priest in the Oscar nominated biopic of President John F. Kennedy's widow, Jackie, now showing in cinemas.

"1984", "The Elephant Man", "Heaven's Gate", "Space Balls", and "King Lear" went on to establish him as one of the most talented actors working in the industry. He is survived by his wife of 12 years, Anwen Rees-Myers, and two children.

"I was chuffed to death when they said he was going to play me because of his professionalism in every film".

"It was terribly sad today to learn of John Hurts passing".

The actor revealed that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the summer of 2015, and opened up about his mortality in a candid interview with the Radio Times. Most recently, Hurt played The War Doctor in Doctor Who. "It was such an honor to have watched you work, sir".

Actor Stephen Fry said Sir John was a "great on the stage, small screen and big".

Hurt was born in 1940, in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England and studied acting at Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
